Phillip Merensky is one of Vabond’s guitarists and vocalists, and an important part of the band’s songwriting and dual-lead-vocal identity.
Phillip had been writing songs and guitar riffs for many years before joining Vabond. Becoming part of the band gave those ideas a larger musical home — a place where arrangements, vocals, guitars and the ideas of five experienced musicians could turn individual material into finished songs.
As both a songwriter and composer, Phillip brings melodic ideas, riffs and song concepts into the collaborative process. Vabond’s approach is built around contribution rather than ego: each member brings something different, and the strongest idea is developed by the band.
Phillip is also one half of Vabond’s two-lead-vocal setup alongside Brad Cunningham. That combination gives Vabond extra range in lead vocals, harmony, songwriting and arrangement, and has become one of the band’s distinguishing musical features.
His songwriting contribution is also reflected in the official credits for Vabond’s Potchefstroom, where Phillip is credited among the songwriters alongside his bandmates and Roelof Christian Fritz.
